If not religious, a baby will be given a name with a nice meaning or be named after a pious person. That is why Muslims from many different countries often have similar names. Names of Arabic origin are also preferred so that there is a sense of origin and solidarity to the larger Muslim community worldwide. Parents may also ask for suggestions from grand-parents, the Imam or other family members. It's usually the parents who choose a name for their baby. The first name is sometimes just an honorary name that shows a link with the Islamic faith and the baby is given a second shorter name by which he is commonly known. Muslims favour names that are virtuous and honour the prophets, as they believe this will inspire a righteous life and bring blessings to the baby. Religion plays a major role in the selection of baby names and names are chosen for their Islamic meaning.
